Is marketing attracting you or are you simply turning off?

BlogCarmel_DSC6917

Over the last few months I finished writing and began the process of drafting my second Danika and Yatimah book, so I’ve had what I term as a short “marketing holiday”. I know all the experts tell me I should keep at it and they’re probably right but the hours in my days stretch only so far. Plus there’s a little voice in my head telling me that it’s nice to give others and myself a break from all my yada, yada, yada.

I’ve thought about this quite a bit as I draft my way through the ‘glorious’ Yatimah winning races and saving the day for her owner Danika because during this process I’ve noticed how nearly every minute emails arrive in my in box trying to sell me something! (consequently I no longer minimise my email)

It seems I’m/we’re constantly bombarded by people who have something to sell. I think we’re all aware that on television an hour long program is timed at about 25 minutes and the rest is advertisements. To be subjected to repetitive advertisements treating the watcher like they have no attention span drives me crazy. Once we worried about our letter boxes being full of junk-mail now that’s changed as most of it’s now online! (I know there is still junk mail arriving in my letterbox;-)  Our email addresses are also acquired and used by a multitude of people/businesses trying to sell something. If you subscribe to one thing and you end up with a string of extra’s coming along for the ride.

Is this whole marketing business out of control? It appears to be a double edged sword, dammed if you do, and dammed if you don’t share information! Lets face it we all like to know what’s new or available.
Is there a middle road?

As Phillip Humbert says in his Newsletter ‘Tips’;

“Thousands of people are eager to buy what you sell. They
want the benefits, the convenience, the comfort or prestige
that you can provide. Human beings are an acquisitive
bunch. We want stuff!

Of course, consumerism can be abused, but buying and
selling is the process that creates the life (and the
lifestyle) we all want. The desire to acquire goes deep,
and it’s a good thing.”

Buying and selling is part of us, part of our society. We all love to buy things and we all have things to sell. We all love things! We all love to enhance our lifestyles.

For me personally I know what I want and I’ve never been coerced into buying anything I didn’t want. Between you and me there’ve been many people (especially lots of horse people) who have tried and failed miserably. I know from experience that both buyers and sellers can lead one another up a garden path with false-hoods (not a species of plant!) planted either side.

I wonder if we’re forgetting that buying and selling is a two way street. I always leave websites that don’t quite ring true. It’s far more comforting to know a businesses sales techniques work on building trust and credibility between the seller and the purchaser.

I’m sure like me, other people buy what makes them happy. And they buy from people they can get to know and like and trust. Now more than any time I can remember, we know more about people than we often need to know.

So when you read:- ‘fulfil your dreams’ – you would hope it could, or ‘searching for that special ?’ – it may well be special, ‘a journey together’ – lets hope it’s a happy one, ‘there’s still time’ – always take your time and make good choices.

Again as Phillp Humbert says;

“If enough people “know and like and trust” you, they
will listen when you offer a product or service that will
make their lives better.

If they “know and like and trust” you, they will flock to
your door and you’ll make all the sales you need.”

Sometimes people buy something as a way to solve a problem but they certainly buy things that make their lives better, easier, simpler, healthier or more comfortable.

And if enough people get the feeling that they can know, like and trust you, they often take that next step to listen or read what you have to say then take another step and buy your product or service. There’s nothing more exciting than selling or buying something that will make yours or someone else’s life happier. It may be a painting, a new lawn mower, a book you’ve been wanting to read or even a horse like Yatimah.

Marketing is here to stay but I wonder if a little reminder to the ‘bombardiers’ is needed. Temperate the bombarding and think about how you feel when YOU ARE constantly bombarded with sale now on, buy now, for sale! Maybe it’s a good idea to occasionally think about how your potential buyers might feel. Otherwise you might go straight to the ‘junk email’.

If consumers “know, like and trust” you, they will be more inclined to listen and actually read what you have to offer. Again put yourself in their shoes to understand what could make their lives better and they might decide to take the initiative to buy from you.
