…Olivia removed Masquil’s halter and watched as he sniffed the air and called to the nearest horses. His light ground-covering trot brought smiles to the onlookers. As he broke into a canter then stretched out into a gallop, Jessikah remembered a line she had read years ago: ‘The swiftest of all horses is the chestnut horse. If you are told an ashqar horse was seen flying, then believe so …’ Despite his ordeal, the stallion held firm to the trust his breed shared with human beings. All that was left to remind them of his experience were the many black scars that criss-crossed his face and body.
Jessikah shuddered, remembering the show. ‘He will always remind us’, she said. The others turned to her. ‘Of the show, I mean. His scars tell a story of what we must never do to our horses. They’re a symbol of the hope that it will never happen again.’
Dana nodded. ‘Masquil has been marked by human selfishness’, she murmured. ‘He’s a testament to the lengths people will go to for glory and a strip of silk.’
